Suppose you throw your hair up,
grab a pan and start to scare up
a quick lunch before you square up
with your dishes;
when into your house comes walking
Julia Child, who begins talking
about recipes for crocking
meats and fishes.
Wow!
Suppose you start to run
and you sweat through mile one
and your laces come undone
and so you squat;
when along comes someone thin
who runs marathons to win
and he stretches out his shin
and smiles a lot.
Wow!
Suppose that you are sleeping
and you dream that something’s creeping
through your window and is leaping
on your bed;
then you wake up very frightened
while an earthquake did not quite end
and your hug on Daddy tightened
‘round his head.
Wow!
Try to feel what might resemble
an enormous kind of tremble
and your mind can’t reassemble
so you fall;
when Zacharias, shepherds, Mary
met the angel, it was scary,
and he was not like a fairy,
not at all.
Wow!
“God is my Hero” stood there
bringing News that was so Good where
preparations for what would bear
joyful tidings;
one who stood amid God’s glory
came to human territory,
mystery of God’s Love Story
now confiding.
Wow!
What could possibly prepare them;
for God’s glory would impair them,
and his holiness would scare them,
and they’d die.
God knew that they were unable
to see Him, so he sent Gabriel;
though scared spitless, they were able
to draw nigh.
Wow!
Zacharias, Mary, shepherds,
met the same angel Daniel heard
when God spoke to him and words
were written down;
and someday, I’ll fall before Him
and, in fright and awe, adore Him
and the angels’ praises for Him
will astound!
Wow!

*The angel Gabriel’s name
means “God is my hero!”
“And the four living creatures,
each one of them having six wings,
are full of eyes around and within;
and day and night they do not cease to say,
‘Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord God, the Almighty,
Who Was and Who Is and Who Is to Come.’ ”
~Revelation 4:8
